Never Enough...Without Him

Ecclesiastes 1:1-8

"Everything is meaningless," says the Teacher, "completely meaningless!" What do people get for all their hard work under the sun? Generations come and generations go, but the earth never changes. The sun rises and the sun sets, then hurries around to rise again. The wind blows south, and then turns north. Around and around it goes, blowing in circles. Rivers run into the sea, but the sea is never full. Then the water returns again to the rivers and flows out again to the sea. Everything is wearisome beyond description. No matter how much we see, we are never satisfied. No matter how much we hear, we are not content.

Solomon said it best, but with my recent revelation, I'm gonna try to say it differently. But as was also said by Solomon, "There's nothing new under the sun." (Ecc. 1:9) So here goes something not new, but new to me.

For those who have not read Ecclesiastes, you'll find that the book can be pretty depressing. However, he wraps it up nicely and leaves you understanding what is truly important.

It's God.

No joke. Ecclesiastes 12:13 "That's the whole story. Here now is my final conclusion: Fear God and obey His commands, for this is everyone's duty."

Everything about life is about God. All of our pursuits, all of our desires, all of our dreams come from God and are then fulfilled best in God.

But life isn't even about pursuing your dreams and desires. It's not about getting the job, our country winning the gold medal, finding a spouse, going to school, a promising new politician, having a baby, buying a house, or any of those dreams. Those are things the world says we need to have. Even in the Church, we fall to that lie.

Those things are benefits, bonuses, blessings that God has bestowed on us.

All we truly need is God.

Jesus quoted it Himself, "Man does not live by bread alone, by every word that comes from the mouth of God." (Matt. 4:4) He truly is the Bread of Life that sustains us.

But it's not even about sustaining us through life, because we're not just in this life to "get through it." We were created to enjoy Him, to be with Him forever.

We're so fixated on this temporary life, that we miss the point of loving Him and adoring Him. Walk through this life with Him and enjoy it as He's asked us to enjoy it.

Yes, we live in a fallen, broken world. Hence the reason Solomon bemoans our state of being. There's so much wrong with it, that we could fixate on that and see everything as meaningless. It can become a burden, an annoyance and a drudgery by focusing on all the wrong things. When we think about the broken bad things, we get lost.

He is constantly drawing us to Him, because He knows that the world will never fill us. He is the best thing for us.

It's all about loving Him and clinging to Him. Everything else is meaningless (in comparison). (Matt. 22:36-40)

So if I don't have a good friendship, a marriage, a child, health, a home, food on the table, gas in the tank, a car, nice clothes, I won't despair. And when I keep my eyes fixed on Him and draw from the love and good He gives, He will be enough.

Love Him first and foremost, and you'll have enough.
