Stop Light

It was late at night, at least the sun had gone down, so it was dark. There were no other cars around, but I approached a stop light for a construction zone. It had been reduced to one lane.
I sat there, singing along to the music in my vehicle, and waited.
And waited,
...and waited,
...and waited.
What am I waiting for?
For a brief second, I wondered if maybe it was broken and I should drive ahead.
Hmm...am I still supposed to be here? This seems awfully long.
Then, horror of horrors, (at least for people-pleasers) two bright lights appeared behind me. Another person was waiting now too. I really began worrying.
What if this person gets upset with me and honks?
Am I being dumb?
What if they drive around me?
To my relief, it changed green. I had stood my ground and obeyed the law, but I was tempted to break it because of my discomfort and irrational fears.
How often do I do that in my walk with God? I think more often than not, He asks me to stop, and instead of obeying, I second guess everything.
Whose voice am I listening to? Do I want to end up like Eve who listened to the serpent?
He asked one little question and got her all confused in her thinking. She didn't guard what she knew to be true.
The serpent only asked, "Did God really say...?" (Gen. 3) And Eve questioned what God said. She even got it twisted herself.
Just like I questioned whether I should obey the traffic law, because it seemed pointless. If I had listened to the questioning and my fears, I could've ended up in an accident or at least a sticky situation. I would've had to back up all the way to the stop light. That would've been embarrassing.
Eve took matters into her hands, like I almost did, and she got it desperately wrong.
When you're at a stop light, real or proverbial, make sure you hold fast to the truths you know. You know what God says. If you don't, run back to the Bible. Ask Him to give you the steadfastness to obey.

You write so well and with such clarity. … the “horror of horrors” of someone behind me impatient with me for following the laws. Great analogy!
Nice blog post.
