My First Dance
I stood among the gathering of strangers and waited patiently for him. He had told me that this event was serving root beer floats. He offered to get them for us and promptly walked over to the serving table. I didn’t know what a root beer float was, but if he was having one, then I would have one too.

He had been telling me for a little while now that we would be coming to this dance. I would eagerly dream about what it would be like over the next couple of days. Now, being at the venue, I was entranced. The atmosphere was warm and inviting with the lights dimmed and red spotlights fixed on the floor. I think I even recall disco lights spinning around.

I waited for him to return with our drinks. I dreamed of what it would be like to dance for the first time. His strong, steady hands would hold mine and we spin around the floor as if we were the only two people. It would be magical. I felt a rush of excitement inside.
I wasn’t scared. Most people would be scared to allow themselves to be flung about the room in the control of another person. Dancing, even with the best of dancers, requires a certain decorum. There’s a specific manner in which you dance to a type of music. You must keep time while moving in step to the music. It was my first dance, what did I know about rhythm, timing and steps?

He returned with a big smile and our drinks. I happily sipped my float and was pleasantly surprised at the bubbles and cream combining in such a divine way. I loved it immediately. After finishing our drinks, it was time to dance. He took my hand and lead me onto the dance floor. I suddenly got nervous and he could tell, but he was very kind. He lovingly held my hand and reassured me.

He told me that the best way for me to learn was to watch what he did. With me being so little, he told me to put my feet on top of his. I did this while holding tightly to his hands. Before I knew it, we were whirling about the room endlessly. It was magical. I held him around the waist. He stroked my hair. Dancing was quite fun. Daddy had given me my first dance and I loved every moment of it.
