A Very Unmerry Christmas

Writer: TammanyTammany

Are you having a merry Christmas? Or an unmerrry one? It can be easy to lose sight of the importance of why we celebrate Christmas amongst the many pretty distractions. We get caught up in the idea of cuddling with our loved one in the wintery atmosphere. The songs about celebrations are touching and beautiful. Glittery and bright packages entice us to forget why we give them.

Christmas isn’t about spending time with loved ones, though it’s a blessing and enjoyable. Being alone at Christmas doesn’t mean you cannot celebrate.

Christmas isn’t about having your health, though it’s ideal. We can rejoice in the Great Physician coming to heal us all.

Christmas isn’t about the carefully laid plans, though it’s fun to dream. Travelling can be enjoyable and thrilling, but it’s not as thrilling as learning that God looked down on you with mercy and sent hope.

Christmas isn’t about the delicious food, though its draw cannot be denied. There are dozens of songs that mention food and drinks. We drink and eat a new feast in the name of Jesus Christ, Who gave Himself up for all.

Christmas isn’t about the orchestrated church programs that tell about Jesus, though they are important. They should point to Him.

It’s about the King Who came as a Savior to rescue the souls of men from their own demise. The likes of which we still suffer from today.

It’s about the hope that He brought. It’s about the Light that came into the darkness.

We can rejoice in this despite whether we have the finances for every gift we wanted to give, despite having the perfect sparkly tree, despite the Christmas program being messed up by someone forgetting their lines, despite the cancer that’s eating away at your body, despite your family no longer being around, despite the pain that hangs in your heart.

Despite it all, we can rejoice.

“And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,

14

“Glory to God in the highest heaven,    and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”

So go enjoy your celebrations, if you’re able. Maybe you’re having a very unmerry Christmas right now. Just don’t forget that none of it matters compared to the gift that lasts eternally-Jesus Christ, our Savior.

Merry Christmas!
